1888–1890 (Catastrophic Eruption of Gran Cratere): A violent, two-year eruption cycle destroyed the mining works, scattered massive volcanic "breadcrust bombs," and permanently ended industrial human habitation inside the crater.

Mid-20th Century (Development of Geothermal Tourism): Inhabitants returned to build a thriving resort economy focused on health tourism, capitalizing on the island's natural sulfur mud baths and geothermal marine springs.
